My Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy in teaching is to give all pupils access to a variety of music styles, focusing on an understanding the music they are studying, how the music is constructed and how to convey the character of the music and the style according to the composer's intentions. By teaching musical understanding right at the beginning of a pupil's musical experience, sets up the foundation for later learning and enables pupils to have independent learning skills.

I treat each pupil as an individual and recognise that each pupil has his /her own requirements for learning and that learning music must be a positive and enjoyable experience. This is also in conjunction with parents' and the school's expectations. I believe in choosing repertoire that inspires pupils to want to learn, therefore encouraging regular practise. This includes a variety of styles and periods of music.

Music Exams

I do encourage pupils to take music exams as I believe that exams are a national and international recognition that a pupil has achieved a certain level in performance and musicianship, which they can be proud of and use in later life. However, I do also appreciate exams are not for everyone and it is down to the individual pupil and their parents. It is important for all pupils to have a goal to work towards, whether it's a school concert, assembly performance or exam as this helps pupils focus in their learning and practise and make good progress.
