Adult Students

What do I find rewarding about teaching adult learners? Not only do I love teaching (it’s what I do) I genuinely love helping people and thanks to zoom I’m able to do both. Let me tell you about some of my students and how this has happened.

Adult Piano learners

Alice is a young professional who lives on her own and predominantly works at home with a stressful job. She has two lovely dogs that are a major source of companionship. She has told me she suffers from mental health issues and zoom lessons work for her as she can ‘slot’ a lesson in her busy online work diary. She says the piano provides her with purpose and is something she does solely for her own wellbeing. She practices everyday and gets a genuine buzz when she has mastered a particular piece. Alice says her lessons with me are her therapy and help her cope and talking with me she can ‘off load’ some of her stresses.

Sarah

is retired and lost her husband quite early into their retirement. She decided to buy a piano and recapture playing the music she enjoyed playing as a child giving her that much needed brain stimulus. She doesn’t drive and lives in a remote village. Having a zoom lesson with me once a week has enabled her to learn the piano and more importantly, for her it's also about just chatting with another person, albeit in the context of a piano lesson.

Harriet is a successful accountant. She initially sought my piano teaching services to teach her 4 yr old daughter. At the time, her daughter was too young so Harriet decided she would have a go instead, why not? Zoom lessons worked well for her and having a lesson at 7.15am meant she could have a lesson before taking her daughter to school and then on to her work. Harriet was a total beginner and has made massive progress. She has told me it is something she does for herself that is far removed from her work allowing her to unwind.
